Earbud keeps falling out of one ear? Your ears aren't a matching pair, and here's what to do about it

Why one ear and not the other

Ear canals differ between your left and right in diameter, depth and the angle they take from the opening. The differences are small, a millimeter of width or a few degrees of angle, and a silicone tip is sensitive to exactly that. So the medium tip that seals perfectly on the left is fractionally too big or too small on the right, seals for a few minutes, then walks out as your jaw moves and sweat arrives. It's not the earbud and it's not you; it's that earbud makers sell tips in pairs and ears don't come that way.

Two other asymmetries show up often. One side sweats more (it's common, and it's the side that faces the fan or the sun). And one side has more wax, which is slick. Both are checked below.

The fixes, in order

1. Mismatch the tips on purpose. Leave the good ear alone. On the loose side, try one size smaller, then one size larger. A too-large tip can feel secure and still creep; a smaller one that seats deeper sometimes holds better. Foam on one side and silicone on the other is fine too.
2. Seat that side differently. Pull the ear up and back, insert, rotate backward a quarter turn. Then try a slightly shallower seat on the loose side; deep insertion puts the tip where the jaw moves the canal most. The full technique is in how to keep earbuds from falling out.
3. Dry that ear first, and mid-session. If the loose side is the sweaty side, a towel before the earbud goes in and a wipe at the halfway point does more than any tip.
4. Add a wing or a hook on that side only. Wingtips and third-party silicone hooks come in pairs but there's no rule you have to use both.
5. Switch to a design that adjusts per ear. An adjustable ear-hook (Soundcore AeroFit 2's four positions, Sport X20's rotating and extending hooks) can be set differently left and right. A clip-on pinches whatever rim it's given and doesn't care about the canal at all.

Things to rule out

• Wax. A waxy canal is a slick canal. If one ear is chronically loose and you've never had it looked at, ask a doctor or pharmacist about safe removal; don't use a swab in the canal.
• A worn tip. Silicone tips stretch and stiffen; a tip that's been on the loose side for a year is probably not the size it was. Swap in a fresh one.
• A damaged bud. Compare the two: a crack in the stem or a tip mount that's loosened changes the seat.

Designs that adjust per ear

A fixed ear-hook is one shape for both ears, and the same asymmetry that defeats a tip can defeat a hook, with the pod sitting slightly wrong on one side. Adjustable hooks fix that side independently: Soundcore's AeroFit 2 has four positions per hook, and the Sport X20's hooks rotate 30 degrees and extend 4 mm in four steps.
