How this ranking was built
This is the list for the person whose last pair popped out at the third set or died after a sweaty month. So the first filter is mechanical: every pick has a retention system other than canal friction (a hook over the ear, a clip on it, a wing in it, or a neckband). The second is the IP rating, read from the maker's own page on September 21, 2026 and linked from every spec. Then the seven-metric rubric at How We Rank: open-ear designs are scored on awareness, sealed designs on noise control, so the two kinds can share one list without pretending they do the same job.
We haven't worn these. The maker's numbers, an independent review where one exists, and a rubric you can read are what the scores are built from.
The four ways an earbud stays in
- Ear-hook (open: OpenFit 2, AeroFit 2, Air 2; sealed: Sport X20, Powerbeats Pro 2, Epic Sport ANC 3, Go Sport+). Wraps over the ear. Most secure short of a neckband.
- Clip-on (OpenDots 2). A cuff on the rim. Lightest; leaves the top of the ear free for glasses.
- Wingtip (Powerbeats Fit). A fin braced in the concha. Good for small ears; some ears reject it.
- Neckband (OpenRun Air 2). Bone conduction; held by the head. Nothing to dislodge; presses on the neck on a bench.

Open or sealed for your gym
Loud gym with music you want to drown out: sealed, with ANC (Sport X20, Powerbeats, Epic Sport ANC 3). Quiet gym, a spotter, a coach, a kid at home: open (OpenFit 2, OpenDots 2, AeroFit 2). Both at different times: the AeroFit 2 Pro, whose hinge swings the driver in for ANC and out for awareness. If you've never thought about it, open-ear vs in-ear is the four-minute version.
Which one fixes your problem
- They fall out. Any hook here; the AeroFit 2 or Sport X20 if fixed hooks never fit. Full list.

Buyer's guide: what decides a workout earbud
1. Retention system before anything else
A tip alone relies on friction, and sweat removes friction. Hook, wing, clip or neckband: pick one. Hooks are the safest default; clips for glasses; wings for small ears; neckbands for outdoors.
2. The IP rating, read literally
IPX4 is splashing water; IP55 is water jets; IP57, IPX7 and IP68 are immersion. Sweat is closer to jets than splashes. For heavy sweaters we treat IP55 as the floor and prefer immersion ratings. Full ladder at IPX4 vs IPX5 vs IPX7; why it matters at can sweat damage earbuds.
3. Buttons
Touch panels misread sweat. The OpenFit 2, Sport X20, Powerbeats and AeroFit 2 Pro use physical controls.
4. The case is the weak point
Almost no case is rated (Beats rates the Powerbeats Fit case IPX4; Shokz rates the OpenDots 2 and Air 2 cases IP54). Wipe the buds before they go in.
5. Battery per charge, not total
The number that matters is per charge. Sport X20 12 h, OpenFit 2 11 h, AeroFit 2 10 h, Powerbeats Pro 2 10 h, Go Sport+ 9 h, Powerbeats Fit 7 h.
How we scored this
Pairs we claim to have worn: none we haven't
Plenty of sites say they ran a hundred miles in every pair on the list. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: classify the retention system (hook, clip, wing, neckband), record the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type from its own product page, cross-reference at least one independent published review where one exists, and score every pick on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from.
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not lab results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
