Bose Ultra Open Earbuds vs Shokz OpenDots: the clip-on head-to-head

The verdict

1. Fit: two cuffs

All three are the same idea: a pod inside the rim, a battery outside, a flexible bridge between. Shokz lists the OpenDots 2 at 6.4 g per earbud and the One at 6.5 g; Bose lists the 2nd Gen at 0.013 lb, about 5.9 g. Under a gram apart. None goes over the ear, which is why all three suit glasses and helmets, and all three share the cuff's one weakness: a slight rotation on hard impact. 2. Sweat: IP57 vs IPX4 vs IP54

This is the comparison. Shokz rates the OpenDots 2 earbuds IP57 (dust-protected, temporary immersion) and its case IP54. Bose rates the Ultra Open 2nd Gen IPX4 (splashing) with no case rating. Shokz rates the OpenDots One IP54 (splashing) with a case listed as not waterproof. Immersion versus splash is two full steps on the IEC ladder, and for a cuff, whose hinge is the hard part to seal, it is a genuine engineering gap rather than a marketing one.

3. Calls: bone-conduction mic vs SpeechClarity

The OpenDots 2 uses three mics: two air-conduction and one bone-conduction mic that picks up your voice as vibration through the jaw. Wind can't reach vibration, which is why we score it 9 for calls. The Bose 2nd Gen uses two microphones with SpeechClarity processing (8). The OpenDots One uses dual AI mics (7). If you take calls on a bike, the sensing path matters more than the count, and the OpenDots 2 has the only second path.

4. Controls

Bose puts a button on each barrel. Shokz uses touch on both OpenDots. With wet fingers a button is the reliable choice, and it's the Bose's clearest practical win in this comparison. If you can live with touch, the OpenDots 2's “upgraded” panel (Shokz's word) is at least the newer implementation.

5. Battery and charging
