Clip-ons put nothing in your canal and nothing over your ear, which is why glasses wearers and helmet wearers love them. The catch is the water rating, and it separates this list into two halves.

Why a clip-on, and why not
A clip-on earbud is a cuff: the speaker sits on the inside of your outer ear, the battery on the outside, and a flexible bridge pinches the rim between them. Nothing enters the canal. Nothing wraps over the top of the ear. That second part is the reason to buy one. Ear-hooks and glasses arms fight for the same real estate; helmets and beanies press on hooks; a cuff avoids all of it. Clip-ons are also the lightest open-ear design, five to six-and-a-half grams per side against seven to twelve for hooks.
The reason not to buy one is retention on impact. A hook can't go anywhere. A cuff can rotate a few degrees when you land a box jump, and it needs a moment to settle back. For running, cycling, lifting and most gym work that never becomes a problem. For sports with hard, repeated impact, an ear-hook from the main open-ear list is the safer bet.
The other reason is water. Until 2026 every clip-on was splash-rated, IPX4 or IP54, because a cuff's hinge is hard to seal. The Shokz OpenDots 2 (IP57) and Baseus Bowie MC2 (IP67) changed that, and they are the top of this list for exactly that reason.

How a cuff stays on
Three things decide whether a clip-on feels secure: the spring tension of the bridge, the cushion between the speaker pod and your ear, and how far the pod reaches toward the canal. Shokz uses a memory-titanium bridge and a fixed cushion. Baseus ships three sizes of detachable air cushion, which is the closest thing to a fit adjustment in the category and why it ranks second despite the brand's thinner review record. Sony sells silicone stability accessories separately, and SoundGuys' tester still said the LinkBuds Clip felt “ready to fall out” even though it never did.
If you've been burned by a cuff before, the trick is placement: seat the pod low and forward on the rim, not up high near the top of the ear, and let the bridge sit in the fold. Our keeping-earbuds-in guide has the rest.

Buyer's guide: choosing a clip-on
Rating first
IP57 or IP67 if you sweat hard or run in rain. IP55 for a normal gym. IPX4 only if your workouts are light or the cuff is mostly for walks and calls. The full digit-by-digit breakdown is in IP ratings explained.
Then battery
Clip-on batteries are small. Shokz and Baseus manage 10-plus hours per charge; Bose gets 7 to 9 depending on generation and spatial-audio settings; JLab publishes only a total. A quick charge (5 minutes for 2 hours on the OpenDots 2) covers the forgot-to-charge morning.
Then controls
Bose puts a real button on each barrel. Shokz and Soundcore use touch on the outer pod. Sony reads taps on your actual ear. Wet fingers favor Bose here; a wet ear favors Sony.
Calls
The OpenDots 2 pairs two air mics with a bone-conduction mic that reads your jaw, which is the strongest wind answer in the category. The Bose 2nd Gen adds SpeechClarity. Soundcore and Baseus use four-mic arrays with AI processing. For more, see best open-ear for calls.
How we scored this
Pairs we claim to have worn: none we haven't
Plenty of sites say they ran a hundred miles in every pair on the list. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: classify the retention system (hook, clip, wing, neckband), record the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type from its own product page, cross-reference at least one independent published review where one exists, and score every pick on a public rubric.
