What to check before you buy

Inside or outside? Outside means open-ear (V20i, Open Sport 2, Flex). Treadmill means the Go Sport+ is fine.
Glasses? The Flex clip is the only pick that doesn't touch the top of the ear.
Android or iPhone? All four work with both; none has a codec that only helps one.
Do they already own open-ears? If they have Shokz or Bose, a sub-$50 pair is a spare, not an upgrade. Give it as a gym-bag backup.

What they'd add

Nothing essential. The Go Sport+ has its charging cable built into the case, which is one less thing to lose. None of the four ships with a proprietary cable.

Expectations

At this price they get retention and a rating, not buttons (all four are touch-controlled) and not deep bass on the open-ear picks. A runner who wants a podcast on a rainy road will be happy; one who wants a bass line should get the Go Sport+ or a bigger budget.

When to spend more

The next tier up buys buttons, a wind rating for calls and a longer battery: the Shokz OpenFit Air 2 or OpenRun Air 2. Both are on best gifts for runners.

Returns

JLab's product pages list a two-year warranty and 30-day returns; Soundcore lists its own policy. Keep the packaging.

Pairs we claim to have worn: none we haven't

Plenty of sites say they ran a hundred miles in every pair on the list. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: classify the retention system (hook, clip, wing, neckband), record the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type from its own product page, cross-reference at least one independent published review where one exists, and score every pick on a public rubric.
