What Android actually adds

Three things, and one of them is the absence of something.

High-bitrate codecs. LDAC, aptX and its variants, and LHDC only work when the phone supports them, and Android is where they do. Four of the six picks here carry one. Google Fast Pair. The one-tap pairing card that pops up when you open the case near your phone. Google's own documentation confirms it is performed through Android only.

No chip lock-in. There is no Android equivalent of the H2 chip pulling you toward one brand, which means the whole field is open. That is why this list is a mix of ear-hooks, a clip-on and two sealed sport buds rather than one company's line-up.

LDAC, aptX and LHDC, in plain terms

A codec is how the audio gets compressed for the radio trip to your ears. SBC is the floor that every device supports; AAC is what Apple uses; LDAC, aptX Adaptive and LHDC carry more data and, on a good file, sound cleaner for it. Both ends have to support the same codec or the connection drops to the highest one they share.

Two honest caveats for a workout page. First, high-bitrate codecs cost battery and are more prone to dropouts when your phone is in an armband on the far side of your body. Second, in a gym, on a treadmill or into a headwind, the difference between AAC and LDAC is not what you will notice; the fit is. Treat the codec as a tiebreaker, not a reason to buy.

Google Fast Pair

Fast Pair is the closest thing Android has to Apple's setup experience: hold the case near the phone, tap the card, done, and the pairing syncs to your Google account so your other Android devices know about it. Google's FAQ confirms devices have to be certified to carry it and that it runs on Android only.

Among the picks here, JLab publishes Fast Pair support on its Flex Open cuffs, and Soundcore and JLab both ship it across parts of their sport ranges. It is a convenience rather than a performance feature, and no earbud should be bought or rejected on it alone.

Why fit still ranks above codecs

This site ranks fit security at 25 percent of the score and sweat resistance at 20, which is 45 percent between them, and it does not weight codecs at all. That is deliberate. An earbud that works loose at the third set is a failed purchase no matter what it streams, and an earbud that dies after a wet August is a failed purchase twice.

So the ordering here is: the AeroFit 2 leads because its four-position hinge fits ears a fixed hook does not, and it happens to have LDAC. The Sport X20 is second on an immersion rating and hooks that rotate 30 degrees and extend 4 mm, despite being SBC and AAC only. The Baseus is third on IP67 and 11-plus hours, with LDAC as the bonus. Buy the IP rating for your sweat, not your sport

Physical buttons beat touch when you are wet

The Sport X20 and OpenFit 2 have buttons. The AeroFit 2, Baseus and JLab Epic Open Sport are touch or tap. It is the single most common regret in this category.
