1. Fit: two hooks, one tip
Both hook over the ear. The Beats adds a sealed tip in the canal, so the hook holds when the tip lets go and the tip steadies the hook: two systems, and Beats reinforces the hook with nickel-titanium alloy. That is the most locked-in fit on this site (10 for fit security). The Shokz hook is titanium under soft silicone with a 12.3 g pod hanging outside the canal: 9. Both beat any clip, wing or plain tip. The Shokz is the one that works with glasses only with care; the Beats has the same problem plus a tip.
2. Sweat: IPX4 vs IP55
Beats rates the Powerbeats Pro 2 IPX4, splashing water. Shokz rates the OpenFit Pro earbuds IP55, water jets. That is one step on the water digit and the whole dust digit. Neither case is rated for immersion (Shokz lists the Pro's case as not waterproof). For a moderate gym session both are fine; for the person this site is for, the one whose earbuds die from sweat, IP55 is the floor and the Beats is under it. Digits: IPX4 vs IPX5 vs IPX7.
3. Isolation vs awareness
The Beats seals the canal and cancels: ANC plus Transparency mode, on Apple's H2 chip. That is the tool for drowning out a class playlist. The Shokz leaves the canal open and offers “Open-Ear Noise Reduction,” processing that lowers ambient sound without a seal; Shokz publishes the battery cost (12 hours off, 6 hours on). It can't match true ANC and doesn't claim to. On the road, the open ear is the safer design; ANC belongs indoors. We score the Beats 9 on noise control and the Shokz 9 on awareness, which is the rubric saying they're both excellent at opposite things.
4. Calls and controls
Shokz: triple AI noise-canceling mics, wind-resistant to 25 km/h, physical buttons. Beats: Voice Isolation for calls, a multifunction button plus a volume rocker on each side, and no published wind rating. For calls in wind, Shokz; for on-device control, the Beats rocker is the best set on the site.
5. Battery and extras
Beats: up to 10 hours per bud, 45 with the case, Fast Fuel 5 minutes for 1.5 hours, USB-C and Qi charging, heart-rate sensors that feed fitness apps. Shokz: 12 hours (6 with reduction on), 50 with the case, 10 minutes for 4 hours, USB-C and wireless charging. Heart rate is the Beats' unique feature; the 10-minute charge is the Shokz's.
