ANC needs a seal; sweat breaks seals
Active noise canceling works by measuring the noise that gets past a passive seal and playing an inverted version of it. No seal, no ANC worth the name; a leaky seal, weak ANC. And a silicone tip's seal is exactly what sweat lubricates and jaw movement loosens. That's why every sealed pick on this list has a hook or a wing holding the tip in place: retention is what keeps the ANC working through a set, not just what keeps the earbud in your ear. The ranking follows the same rubric as the rest of the site, with noise control replacing awareness for sealed designs (How We Rank).

The two open-ear hybrids
Soundcore AeroFit 2 Pro: an ear-hook whose hinge has two positions. In one, the driver sits outside the canal like any open-ear; in the other it seals the canal entrance and ANC switches on. Soundcore publishes the cost: 7 hours open, 5 hours sealed. It's the one pair on this site that is genuinely both, and the right buy if your week mixes a loud gym and a road.
Shokz OpenFit Pro: stays open. Its “Open-Ear Noise Reduction” is processing that lowers ambient sound at the ear without a seal, so it can't match true ANC and Shokz doesn't claim it does. Shokz also publishes the cost: 12 hours with it off, 6 with it on. Worth it for a treadmill row with a TV; not a substitute for the Sport X20 in a class with a subwoofer.
When you actually want ANC at the gym
- A class with a playlist you didn't choose, at a volume you didn't choose.
- Long steady cardio on a machine, where isolation makes 40 minutes feel like 30.
- A gym with a TV wall.
When you don't: any session with a partner or coach, any free-weight work where hearing a plate matters, and anything near a road. For those, the open picks on best workout earbuds.

Buyer's guide: ANC that survives a workout
Retention first, ANC second
An ANC bud that creeps out of the canal loses its ANC before it loses its grip. Hook or wing, always.
The rating
The Sport X20 (immersion) and Epic Sport ANC 3 (IP66) are the two sealed ANC picks rated for real sweat. Both Beats are IPX4. Ladder at IPX4 vs IPX5 vs IPX7.
Battery with ANC on
ANC halves battery on several pairs: Sport X20 12 to 7 hours, OpenFit Pro 12 to 6, AeroFit 2 Pro 7 to 5. Read the ANC-on number, not the headline.
Transparency mode
Both Beats and the Sport X20 have a transparency mode that pipes the room in through the mics. It's useful for a quick word with a spotter and no substitute for an open ear on a road.
How we scored this
Pairs we claim to have worn: none we haven't
Plenty of sites say they ran a hundred miles in every pair on the list. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: classify the retention system (hook, clip, wing, neckband), record the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type from its own product page, cross-reference at least one independent published review where one exists, and score every pick on a public rubric.
