Shokz OpenFit 2 review: the ear-hook we keep recommending, and its one unrated part

Who it's for, and who should skip it

For: anyone whose sealed earbuds work loose during a workout; runners and cyclists who want to hear traffic; people who want a button instead of a touch panel; anyone who needs 10-plus hours per charge.

Skip: small ears (9.4 g per side on a hook is noticeable), heavy glasses, and swimmers or shower-listeners (IP55 is jets, not immersion). If sound leakage in a quiet office is your main concern, no open-ear is quiet enough, and this guide explains why.

Fit and retention

The OpenFit 2 is a classic ear-hook: a silicone-coated hook over the top of the ear, a speaker pod hanging in front of the canal. Shokz's table lists the retention system as “Ear-Hook” and the earbud weight at 9.4 g (plus or minus 0.2 g), with a 53 g case. Ear-hooks are the most secure open-ear system on our rubric (9 of 10 for fit security; only a neckband scores higher) because the hook can't rotate off the ear the way a cuff can under impact.

The trade is weight and glasses. At 9.4 g the pod has some leverage on the top of the ear over a long session, and a thick glasses arm shares that exact spot. Shokz's own lighter answer is the OpenFit Air 2 (7.2 g); Soundcore's is a hinge on the AeroFit 2 that changes the pod angle.

Sweat: IP55 buds, unrated case

The earbuds are rated IP55: dust-protected and resistant to water jets. That is above the splash-only IPX4 of the Bose Ultra Open cuffs and on par with Soundcore's hooks. The charging case is listed as “Not Waterproof” in Shokz's own table. In practice that means the failure mode isn't sweat on the earbud; it's a wet earbud placed on the case's charging contacts and left there.

Sound and leakage

The OpenFit 2 uses what Shokz calls DualBoost, a dual-driver arrangement, with DirectPitch, Shokz's technique for aiming sound at the canal and reducing what escapes. The 2+ adds Dolby Audio processing on top. Dual drivers are why we score the OpenFit 2 an 8 of 10 on sound, above single-driver budget open-ears; open-ear bass still can't match a sealed earbud, and DirectPitch reduces leakage rather than removing it.

Battery, charging and controls

11 hours per charge and 48 hours with the case, a 10-minute quick charge worth 2 hours, a 1-hour full charge for the earbuds and 100 minutes for the case over USB-C. Bluetooth 5.4 with multipoint, dual AI noise-canceling mics, and controls that combine a physical multifunction button with touch. The button is the detail we value most: touch panels misread wet fingers, and a button doesn't.

OpenFit 2 vs OpenFit 2+

Same earbud, same fit, same 11 hours, same IP55. The 2+ adds a wireless-charging case (4 hours on a Qi pad versus 100 minutes wired) and Dolby Audio. The case is 3 g heavier. Pay the difference for the Qi pad or not at all.
