Shokz OpenFit 2 vs OpenFit Air: two grams against three hours

Shokz sells the same open-ear idea at two weights. The OpenFit 2 is the full-size hook with the big battery and the second driver; the Air line is 7.2 g and asks you to give up both. Here is the swap, on Shokz's own numbers.

The verdict

Every published number

All three sit on the same Shokz comparison table, which is the useful case for a spec sheet: one maker, one measurement method, so the gaps are real rather than marketing artefacts.

Shokz's official product comparison table, read October 17, 2026.

1. 7.2 g against 9.4 g

Two and a bit grams per side sounds like a rounding error and is not, because of where the mass sits. An open-ear hook carries its battery and driver in a pod that hangs in front of the canal, and the hook over the top of your ear is the lever arm holding it there. More mass on the pod means more rotational pull on that hook, so the pressure concentrates on one spot behind the ear rather than spreading along it.

Three groups feel it reliably. People with small ears, where the hook arc is already close to the limit of the space available — the picks for that are in best open-ear earbuds for small ears. People who wear glasses, because the hook and the arm compete for the same groove; the layering order that helps is in open-ear earbuds with glasses. And anyone wearing them for four hours or more at a desk, where it stops being about security and becomes about soreness — the mechanical causes are in why do my earbuds hurt my ears?

If none of those is you, the two grams will not register and you should buy on battery instead.

2. Battery and the quick charge

11 hours per charge and 48 with the case on the OpenFit 2; 8 hours and 36 on the Air 2. Both refill the buds in about an hour over USB-C.

The quick charge runs the other way, which is easy to miss: 10 minutes buys 2 hours on the OpenFit 2 and 3 hours on the Air 2. So the OpenFit 2 is the one you buy if you want to charge rarely, and the Air 2 is the one you buy if you charge in the gaps. For a reader whose honest pattern is grabbing earbuds out of a drawer ten minutes before a run, the Air 2 is the better match even though its headline figure is lower.

Both carry Bluetooth multipoint, so a phone and a laptop at once works either way. The Air 2 is on Bluetooth 6.1 against the OpenFit 2's 5.4; in daily use that gap is not something you feel, and it mostly tells you which model Shokz shipped more recently (August 2026 against January 2025).

3. One driver or two

The OpenFit 2 runs DualBoost: two drivers per side, one aimed at the low end. The Air 2 runs a single driver with Shokz's Bassphere and OpenBass 2.0 processing. Both use DirectPitch to aim sound at the canal and cut what escapes sideways.

An open-ear earbud makes bass under a handicap: there is no seal, so there is no pressure chamber, so the low frequencies that a sealed tip gets for free have to be produced by moving more air. A second dedicated driver is the only hardware answer, and it is why the OpenFit 2 scores higher on sound on our rubric. Processing helps, but it is working against physics. The full version of that trade-off, and what you get in exchange for it, is in open-ear vs in-ear earbuds.

One related point on controls: the Air 2 uses pressure-sensitive buttons, the OpenFit 2 has a physical button plus a touch surface. Both beat a pure touch panel in the rain, which is more than the older Air can say.

4. The case rating nobody mentions

The original OpenFit Air

The 2024 OpenFit Air is still on shelves and still shows up in search results, so it is worth stating plainly what changed. Same 7.2 g, same case weight — and then IP54 on the buds instead of IP55, 6 hours instead of 8, a 10-minute charge worth 2 hours instead of 3, Bluetooth 5.2 instead of 6.1, and touch controls instead of pressure buttons.

Those touch controls are the part we would push back on hardest for this site's reader. A touch panel with a wet finger on it skips tracks you did not ask to skip, and IP54 is the floor of the Shokz open-ear line: a splash rating, not a jet rating. Buy the original Air only if the discount is deep enough that you would replace it without complaint. Otherwise the Air 2 is the same weight done properly on every line that matters.

If you want the whole Shokz range ranked rather than three hooks from it, start at best Shokz headphones. If you are not committed to a hook at all, ear-hook vs clip-on is the decision above this one, and the clip-on side of it includes the IP57 Shokz OpenDots 2 — the only Shokz open-ear with an immersion rating on the buds.

What the spec sheet supports

  • 11 hours per charge is the longest of the mainstream ear-hooks
  • A real button, so a sweaty finger doesn't misfire a touch control
  • Dual drivers give it more low end than single-driver open-ears
  • IP55 earbuds handle sweat and rain

Where it falls short

  • The case is not water resistant at all; don't drop it in a wet gym bag
  • 9.4 g per side is heavier than the OpenFit Air 2 (7.2 g) or Shokz's clip-ons
  • Open-ear leakage: people next to you on a quiet bus will hear it

Skip this if…

…you have small ears or glasses that fight a thick hook; the 7.2 g OpenFit Air 2 or a clip-on sits lighter.

How we scored this

The research behind every pick

Each pair on this page is researched and compared the same way: we classify the retention system that holds it on (hook, clip, wing, neckband), read the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type straight off its own product page and manual, check the sweat and water rating against the IEC 60529 standard, cross-reference independent published reviews, and score every pick on a public rubric. Every figure links to the document it came from, so you can check any number in one click.

Prices come live from Amazon, so what you see is what you pay today. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is the Shokz OpenFit 2 or the OpenFit Air 2 better?
Neither is a straight upgrade. The Air 2 is lighter (7.2 g against 9.4 g), newer, has a rated IP54 case and a faster quick charge. The OpenFit 2 has three more hours per charge and a second driver for bass. Both have IP55 earbuds and multipoint.
How much battery do you give up on the OpenFit Air 2?
Three hours per charge (8 against 11) and 12 hours of case capacity (36 against 48). You get some of it back in the quick charge: 10 minutes buys 3 hours on the Air 2 against 2 on the OpenFit 2.
Is the OpenFit Air still worth buying?
Only on a deep discount. Against the Air 2 at the same 7.2 g it is IP54 instead of IP55, 6 hours instead of 8, Bluetooth 5.2 instead of 6.1, and touch controls instead of pressure buttons.
Which one is better with glasses?
The lighter one, generally: less mass on the pod means less pull on the hook that shares the groove with your glasses arm. A clip-on avoids the conflict entirely, because nothing goes over the top of the ear.
