Why only open-ear
On a bike you are the slowest, softest thing on the road and the traffic you need to hear is behind you. A sealed earbud with the volume up removes that channel; a transparency mode restores a processed version of it with latency. An open ear restores it at natural volume with no mode to forget. That is why this list has no sealed picks at all, unlike our running list. Helmet straps and sunglasses
A helmet strap runs down in front of and behind the ear; sunglasses arms run over the top of it; a neckband runs under the helmet's rear dial. Clip-ons touch none of those, which is why the OpenDots 2 and Baseus top a cycling list they don't top elsewhere. Ear-hooks share the top of the ear with the glasses arm and can be pinned by the strap; the lighter the hook (OpenFit Air 2, 7.2 g), the less it matters. Neckbands coexist with most helmets and conflict with some rear dials; details on best bone conduction for cycling.

Buyer's guide: earbuds for the bike
Clip, hook or neckband
Clip for glasses and helmet straps. Hook for fuller sound if your frames have thin arms. Neckband for lights (Suunto) or the most secure fit (Shokz), if your helmet dial allows it.
Rating for spray
Road spray off a wet wheel is a jet: IP55 minimum. The OpenDots 2 (IP57) and Baseus (IP67) are immersion-rated; the Bose is IPX4 and is the fair-weather pick.
Controls with gloves
Buttons (OpenFit 2, OpenFit Pro, Pro 2, Bose) or head gestures (Suunto) work through gloves; touch panels (OpenDots 2, Baseus) mostly don't. If you ride gloved, that's a real point against the top pick.
Battery for a long ride
Wing 2 36 hours with its power bank; Pro 2 12; OpenFit Pro 12 (6 with reduction on); OpenFit 2 11; OpenDots 2 10; Baseus 11 to 13.

Pairs we claim to have worn: none we haven't
Plenty of sites say they ran a hundred miles in every pair on the list. We don't say that, and we say so on every page. What we do instead: classify the retention system (hook, clip, wing, neckband), record the maker's published IP rating, weight, battery, charging, mic and control type from its own product page, cross-reference at least one independent published review where one exists, and score every pick on a public rubric.
